They are pretty rare and even in rough condition, collectors seem to come out of thin air to bid. Final selling price was $220.00.
My coat collection has gotten out of hand.

This is the Pendleton High Grade Western Wear Rancher Coat in blue shadow plaid with a shearling collar. Judging by the lack of a wool mark on the label (Pendleton added that in the early 70s, then removed it again in the 90s), I would guess this jacket to be made in the mid-late 1960s.

They were snatched out of a pile of old broken toys, cheap armless sunglasses, left-over wrapping paper, discarded Tupperware, and torn boxes. They weren't taken because of any possible value, they were taken because they were interesting.

We have a friend, Robert, who works a couple of days at the small vintage movie theater next to our favorite bar. He also happens to be a photographer, auction caller, and dealer of small antiques. Robert specializes in old photographs and postcards. We took these into him to see what he had to say. He recognized most of the subjects and photographers. Some are pretty obvious.

Robert explained to us (based on the paper) that these were reprints of turn-of-the-century to 30s photographs. They were actually printed in the 1940s. He valued them at about $25 a piece. We gave them to him for a few movie passes. We always get excited when we find old photos and postcards now... It means a trip to talk to ole Robert and an encyclopedia of knowledge dealt out faster than I can think.

I wish I could give you all the specifics on these, but I'm just not that smart.
Not many of these made it through the years and wars without being destroyed or lost. 30, 40, 50 or 60 years ago, no one could probably even fathom the value that a simple stocking cap could have in the long term.

This one sold at auction for $175.50 here. Made by Rudolph Knitting Mills, it was probably issued to the sailor who wore it in 1970.

We've recently picked up another Navy watch cap that will be put to auction soon. These are always pretty exciting auctions so we can hardly wait! We'll post pics after it's up.
There is a ton of conflicting information out there about the REI companies labels and addresses throughout the years. All that I known for sure is that Recreational Equipment Inc. started out in 1938 selling ice climbing axes, then became known as the REI co-op in the early 1970s focusing on high-end mountain climbing gear.

The vintage Coats & Clark zipper on this parka was produced in the mid-50s and probably into the very early 60s. The canvas is reminiscent of the military jackets being issued during the Korean War.

This piece was sold to Heller's Cafe, publishers of the Kings of Vintage books and go-to design consultants for a few heritage clothing re-producers. Who knows, maybe you'll see a similar piece in the J.Crew store soon.

Pendleton Cowichan "Dude" Sweater (borrowed from eBay)

A traditional Cowichan sweater would be made by the Cowichan people of the Salish Nation in British Columbia. They are a heavy sweater knit from natural sheep's wool, undyed and unprocessed so that the natural lanolins are left which helps to shed water. The original designs were derived at the turn of the century from mixing Salish weaving techniques with knitting styles brought over by British settlers. There are entire books written on the subject and I won't even try to attempt any history lessons.

That aside, manufactures, hand-knitters, and resellers (myself included) have taken a bit of liberty using the term Cowichan to describe their products. Clothing manufacturers such as Pendleton, Filson, Ralph Lauren, Mary Maxim, and Eddie Bauer all have sweaters in their catalogs that they refer to as Cowichans. The "Dude" sweater is actually manufactured by Pendleton and fetches some pretty ridiculous prices in eBay land. Patterns have been made and sold for hand-knitters in all sorts of designs since the 1940s. Some of the 50s hand-knit sweaters are quite sought after and tend to be a little brighter with bold designs.

We had the fortune of coming across an early 60s, Veitnam era Jungle coat recently. These jackets are more commonly referred to as the "slant pocket jungle jacket" or something of the sort. This one pictured was the first pattern used and considered pretty rare and collectable. It's easily distinguishable from the more common jackets by the exposed buttons on the pocket and lack of a gas flap at the neck.

This particular jacket fetched $203.50 at auction here.

As a comparison, this more common jacket from 1969 featured ripstop fabric and as you can see, the buttons on the pocket flaps had a cover added to them to keep soldiers from getting snagged on the tropical foliage.

This jacket sold for a whopping $24.99 here.
We got to own this Rich-Sher motorcycle jacket for a short while. For being from the mid to early 50sthe front-quarter horsehide was amazingly smooth, supple and well preserved. The quilted lining had many cunning repairs made to keep it functioning for 60+ years, and the original front zipper was replaced. This jacket sold at auction for about $300.

This M445-A Jacket was very early or pre-WW2. The Navy made some changes after this model was issued, and the army changed it again to make the more common B-3 jacket.
G. Spalding & Bros. Varsity SweaterSo... Summer was really busy... Too busy. We haven't posted anything in awhile due to the extreamly sunny and long Portland, OR summer. We made a ton of great picks over the last while and will spend some rainy time loading up photo eye candy.

A good winter start is this 1930s or 40s A. G. Spalding & Bros. wool varsity sweater. It's seen plenty of wear but still found a home in a fan's collection.

We found this vintage sweatshirt that was stenciled for the OSU Rowing crew and couldn't believe how awesome the condition was. To be honest, it has been quite tricky to date because the white talon zipper appears to be from a different era than the sweatshirt itself. After pondering and examining it for a bit, it appeared that the zipper was installed at a later date.

This sweatshirt is 100% nylon fleece. The ribbing is in immaculate condition and still very elastic. If it wasn't an adult extra small, it might have stayed around here for awhile.
C. Filson Mackinaw Cruiser Hunting JacketThis is a late 40s Filson jacket that was rescued from a trip to the dump. Even with the few moth bites to it, we picked it up and set it to auction.

This is one of the 16 oz.wool surge jackets that were very popular amongst Pacific Northwest foresters, lumberjacks and firefighters as well as hunters.

The auction was pretty uneventful, probably because fall/winter clothing sales are low this time of year, but whoever got it found a great gem of an item in a sea of eBay crap.
Yet another treasure fished out of the Goodwill bins.

This 1930s hunting vest had seen quite a bit of action in it's lifetime. It had plenty of paint and blood stains, and was missing a button off of the front pocket.

We were happy that this was sold to a world renowned vintage collector/publisher/clothing maker. It will become a museum piece that will be cherished for many decades to come. This vest was about 30 minutes away from being shredded to rags until we dug it out.

Final auction price: $276.00
would have to do some serious bundling to survive to sub-zero
temperatures at high altitude flight. Sheepskin flight pants and coats
were a staple amongst the US Army Air Corps from the 30s up through
World War 2.

There is much documentation and trade
happening of the "B" series flight pants, but I haven't been able to
find much about the earlier "A-1" flight pants. Unlike the B-1, which
is made entirely of sheepskin, these A-1 pants are made of a much more
durable horsehide with the sheepskin being quilted to the inside. I
suspect that, much like the A-2 horsehide jackets, production costs and
supply forced the Army to find a more practical alternative in order to
keep up with the war-time demand.

An excellent condition
pair of B-1 flight pants can fetch between $250 and $400, but due to the
limited availability, I have no idea what the actual value of a pair of
A-1 flight pants is.

This pair was made by the Switlik Parachute & Equipment
Company probably in the mid-late 1930s. I'm assuming that they are one
of the earliest examples of a pair of high altitude flight pants. You
can check back and find out how much these sold for here.
Not exactly an opportune time to start a new manufacturing company given the United States was heavily involved in WW2. But V-M kept plugging along, and became a stereo producing juggernaut throughout the fifties an into the mid-60s.

In the late 60s and early 70s, when all the other major electronics manufacturers were shifting their production over seas, Voice of Music refused, keeping all of their production in Benton Harbor, which ultimately led to their demise. The company finally came to an end in 1977 when a power failure in New York City
prevented a wire transfer of critically needed funds, and the company
declared bankruptcy.

If you're interested in restoring one of these, or the history of the company, everything you need can be found here.

The Voice of Music Model 362 pictured below was in production in 1966 when V-M was at the top of their game. A true testament to the quality and craftsmanship of American manufacturing, this stereo still functions nearly fifty years later. The sound is amazing an loud. This three-piece system was well worth the $5.00 we spent for it, and it looks as though it's taken up permanent residence in our living room.

This thing is up for auction tonight here.

It's hard to find much info on this maker, but from what I can gather, they were associated with the J.C. Penny company at some point. They may have been one of the contractors Penny's used to manufacture their line of leather jackets. I've found some examples of Daniel Boone labels being sewn over Penny's labels.

At any rate, here's some photos of one awesome 40s horsehide jacket:

Entire books have been devoted to the US Navy G-1 flight jacket. There have been dozens of makers contracted by the government to produce them. Rather than try to write the entire history, I'll just direct you here for a good rundown.

Of all of the jackets issued by the military, these are defiantly my favorite. The shade of the leather, material, and color of the collar make each jacket fairly original and unique.

If you want an authentic USN jacket, there are a few things to look for to make sure they aren't a civilian jacket. Each Navy issued jacket will have "USN" poked into the windflap behind the zipper. They feature a heavy Conmar zipper, and an identifying tag at the nape of the neck which will tell you the maker and year issued. Quite often (although not on these examples) a white "USN" is stenciled on the back of the collar.

The first jacket below is a 1940s civilian jacket made by Durable. The rich brown horshide, paired with the caramel mouton collar and the angled breast pocket made this jacket a winner at auction. It was bought from another picker for $100 and sold at auction for $315.
The official military G-1 jacket didn't really come into being until after WW2. Previous to 1947, the jacket that was to become the G-1 was called the M-422. The G-1 is still issued for naval flying today by the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

G-1 flight jackets were tight fitting and often worn underneath heavier flight jackets to keep pilots and crew warm at extremely high altitudes.

The leather itself is almost always goatskin, which is extremely tough and durable without being as heavy as other leathers.

These two jackets will be going to auction within the next few days.
Many more modern leather makers have created and sold there own versions of the G-1 flyers jacket. Although they don't maintain the same collectable value as the military issued jackets. They can still be very valuable and sought after.

This Schott I-S-674 is a bit of a bastard child of the G-1 and A-2 jackets with a little bit of there own twist thrown in. The hide is much heavier than the military jackets and it's also pile lined for warmth. It's become one of my favorite jackets and won't be for sale until I find a better replacement.
After a little bit of tug-o-war at our regular picking dump, Darcie emerged from the melee with these two Doctor's bags circa 1900-1910. The bags in themselves were amazing enough, but when we got them opened, the contents totally blew our collective minds.

We really don't know exactly what we're going to due with these. As of right now, there sitting on my office desk to be played with and admired. I'll let the photos speak for themselves:
During World War 2, the N-1 deck jacket was standard issue to all enlisted Navy personnel. It originally featured a heavy "Jungle-Cloth" outer shell with a man-made "alpaca" fur lining. These jackets were/are extremely weather repellant and warm. This first one is a post-WW2 deck jacket that we recently put to auction and received $206.47. It was in immaculate shape but had none of the desirable USN stenciling or sailor customization. Just a fine example of an N-1 deck jacket the way it would have been issued.

This N-1 Jacket is from the WW2 period, complete with stains, stencils, and wear from the era. It appears to have been issued to 2 different sailors, with the second writing his name over the first on the back. Perhaps the first perrished in combat, who knows.

One of the perks/downfalls of being a picker is that you don't really own anything, you just get to use it for a while. This N-1 is being used by me personally until it's restoration is completed. A new-old-stock Conmar zipper will replace the replacement. The missing buttons will be replaced with originals. The tattered elbow will mended. It will receive a mild cleaning to remove the loose dirt, and possibly the USN stencil on the front will be touched back up to make it visible again. Once all of this is done, and something else catches my fancy, it will be placed at auction. The projected value is somewhere between $350-$500.

I had made tons of discoveries from this place, but had no idea that these sorts of things were laying buried, one step away from being shredded and bailed. The total cost for the purchase was $3.69. A lofty price for an item from "the bins." We sold it at the most inopportune time, mid-July (just when everyone is looking for a heavy fur motorcycle jacket) for just over $1200.00. This sale started an obsession.
They just don't make the patterns the same as they used to. I'm a particular fan of the narrower shoulders and longer sleeves. Modern reproductions don't seem to pick up on those subtleties that only someone who was trained in the old art of hand-pattern-making (Darcie) gets.
If you run across one of these... Buy it! Then email me. I would love to make an offer.Stumptown-traders.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04782331761244957195noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7373110559602829204.post-84299638493790433532012-01-17T08:15:00.000-08:002012-01-19T13:25:30.742-08:00Yeah... Another blog.Born out of recession/necessity in 2009, Stumptown trading were two hard-headed, un-employable, junk-picking, creative knockabouts with $135-a-week in government funds and a huge dream of being able to pay the rent.

It seems like a century ago. A lot has changed and evolved. This blog wasn't created to chronicle the developments of our lives or company (although I might get Darcie to tell the story of her $10.86 Cal 29 Sailboat she bought at auction in Long Beach) but rather document some of the great finds we unearth and hopefully provide some help to fellow diggers in their research of tattered gems and the debacle of retailing them on-line.Stumptown-traders.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04782331761244957195noreply@blogger.com0
